About the Tractors
Roger and James purchased two refurbished Massey Ferguson 135s especially for the Slow Way Down. Dating back to the 1970s, the tractors resemble the typical British farm tractor of their childhoods. They were once common in the fields of Britain, but today many models have been sold abroad and very few are left in the UK.
These sturdy little farm vehicles have an engine capacity of 47hp and are capable of maintaining a steady 15 miles an hour for hours, days, even weeks on end. They should go all day on a tank of diesel.
The lads will be fitting air-sprung seats to counteract the lack of suspension as they bounce along Britain’s B roads. They will tow transport boxes for loo roll and other essentials. The tractors are highly manoeuvrable and the two intrepid travellers will be able handle the toughest terrain.
There will be no cab to protect the drivers, who will be exposed to everything an early British summer can throw at them.
